Departure from Ponta Delgada heading to Lagoa do Fogo, in the Serra de Água de Pau, located in the center of the island, in the crater of an extinct volcano. Surrounded by the island’s idyllic and pristine landscape, with crystal-clear waters and a white sand beach peninsula, the lake rests peacefully at the base of a volcanic basin.

We then continue down to the town of Ribeira Grande, which preserves an interesting collection of 17th- and 18th-century Baroque architecture that characterizes the town. Still in the town, we can enjoy a unique, flavor-filled visit to a Liqueur Shop, highlighting the passion fruit liqueur.

The tour continues towards Furnas, with stops at points of interest, namely the Tea Plantations, to observe the tea production process (no production on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays) and to taste green and black teas. Stop at the Pico do Ferro viewpoint, from where you can admire a stunning view of the island’s largest and oldest volcanic crater, within which lies the Vale das Furnas. It is a fantastic environment where the colorful flowers blend with lush vegetation originating from various continents.

In the Vale das Furnas, we stop at Lagoa das Furnas, a tranquil and romantic lake, featuring the Gothic profile of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias reflected in its waters. On one of its banks, volcanic fumaroles act as natural “kitchens” where the famous Cozido das Caldeiras is cooked underground in hermetically sealed containers. Upon arrival in Furnas, lunch is served: the traditional Cozido das Caldeiras.

After lunch, a walking tour in Terra Nostra Park follows. This is a romantic setting of lakes, winding paths, exotic flowers, centuries-old trees, and a thermal water pool. We also take a short walk in the Furnas calderas area, where various volcanic phenomena can be observed.

The tour returns to Ponta Delgada, passing through Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s first capital.
